But, I thought reporters had sources. Are you telling me they are just stenographers for the police, and incapable of doing some actual reporting?

Either way, as I said, the stories did not address whether or not the race of the shooter(s) was know. It was left unaddressed.

We're in a hyper sensitive time regarding issues like this. People do want to know. And, they feel like they would have been told right away if the situation was reversed.

We don't know if reporters asked the question. If they did ask the question, but didn't get an answer, why not tell us that in the initial reports?

Duncan is a town of 25,000 halfway between OKC and Wichita Falls. It is in BFE. The Banner - the town's newspaper - surely does have sources. The AP in OKC probably does too. The rest of us? Nope.

Complicating the flow of information was the fact all three suspects are juveniles.

But, yeah, media conspiracy. That's it.

Uh, I don't think those are the main reasons the Zimmerman case exploded.

Which makes many in the media uncomfortable. They don't want the news to be "twisted" by folks with an agenda, and thus try to underplay certain stories, or aspects of stories.

    Prime example

Many are just looking for consistency, and not finding it.

The nationality -- and, by default, the race -- of the victim was immediately identified. In the case of random crimes, people are always looking for motive. Whether his race was a motive was sure to come up, and people immediately wanted this angle explored, if not resolved.

We all know reporters though the same thing. When an obvious part of the story is avoided, it's obvious. It just is. If they asked the question, and couldn't get an answer, then why not tell us?

If they didn't ask the question, they aren't doing their job.

According to FBI stats, there were 193 white- or Hispanic-on-black murders in the United States in 2011. There were reasons that this particular case drew as much attention as it did, compared to those others. Stand Your Ground was an enormous one, particularly because it breathed new life into the gun control debate by introducing a new aspect of it for people to chew on. So was the age disparity of the shooter and the victim.

I am almost positive when this story broke Sunday night, the teens had shot two people. Now I am reading nothing about another victim.

    Anybody else remember another victim?

The Zimmerman story and this story are not the same. They just aren't. As bad as you want them to be the same, they aren't the same. You and your entire army are wildly overplaying your hand here, and it is going to bite you in the ass in the end. You'll end up bitching to each other about how put-upon you are, with no one else paying attention. And it will be your own faults.

And, again, at this stage of the Zimmerman coverage, how was it being covered? We don't even know. We haven't looked it up yet. You are comparing the Zimmerman coverage at its apex to the coverage of this incident two days in. That's not fair.

C'mon Dick. How many of those murders involves folks who did not know each other prior to the murder?

    Indeed, another aspect.

I would venture that very few of them involved a non-Hispanic white murdering a black person. I bet less than 10.

Are people interested in the race of the shooters or not?

If they are, the press should either tell us, or have a damn good reason for not telling us -- and they should tell us that reason.

If you write a story on any subject, and leave out a piece of information your readers/viewers wants to have, you should tell them why you are unable to provide it.

First: It's been two days. Two days.

Second: Again, it is SOP not to name race unless it's a relevant aspect of the story. You don't name race in case it's a relevant aspect of the story. And you certainly don't start naming race for the reason you urge: Because an army of Rush-listening mouth-breathers who couldn't pick the New York Times out of a lineup but think they know everything about it, "want[] to have" it.

Hold your horses a little bit. This guy's body isn't even cold yet, and you want your pound of George Zimmerman flesh. You're going to get it.

    Why?

And, if it is, they should say so. They tell us all the time that they don't name victims of sexual assault.

It's perfectly reasonable to want to know the race -- especially in light of the Zimmerman case. People want to think about motive in a random case.

It's just the opposite Dick. The news doesn't want to report this information for fear of supplying "mouth-breathers" with ammunition. That's not a good enough reason to leave out a detail people want.
