Five part, 10 hour series on the history of our sport.

No matter what your feelings are about CBC, they do this sort of programming really well. Mark Starowicz, the executive producer, also did the superb "Canada: A People's History".

Narrated by Paul Gross, he of "Due South", "Men with Brooms" and "Slings and Arrows" fame.

We invented it. It's kinda like baseball for us.

Anyway, the NHL has little to do with the culture of hockey. The fact that every little town over 500 souls has its own rink is the true measure.

(And I threw that "our" in there on purpose. Thanks for taking the bait) :)

    Two schools of thought.

Some maintain that lacrosse, since it predates hockey, is our true national sport. I think you can make an argument for both.

Over 500 souls? hell most of the communities with more than 50 on the praries has a rink of some sort, and just about every farm has a pond that they scrape during the winter for hockey.

Beef, freezing the main street doesn't count as a rink.

I'm serious, actual rinks. Some of the are still natural ice, but they are still there.
