    WFW.

  2. Wardrobe allowance for a tie?

We might not be attorneys guys, but we make enough to buy our own ties and to dress like professionals.

And shirts? Seriously, I have about three good ones. Certainly not enough to wear during a typical week in a professional office setting.

And yes, every SE I've worked with has worn shorts on occasion. Not to an event, but around the office, for sure. And I wear jeans, oh, probably 250 days of the year when I'm at work.

No, we don't. I dressed well to the interview. I was told I never had to again. I wear khakis, jeans, khaki shorts, T-shirts, polo shirts, hooded sweatshirts, etc. They're all clean/presentable and they're all acceptable in my workplace. I'm a desker; I work nights. And it's not a piddling weekly, or a small daily. We're a top-10 APSE section. My paper just spends its time worrying about the important things. They don't care if we look good while doing a good job, they just care that we can do a good job. That's the way it should be, IMO.

Seriously, the papers that make a big deal about newsroom dress code are usually the papers that don't make a big enough deal about newsroom product.

  6. Exactly. You work a desk. No one gives a fuck what you wear because you don't go out into the public ... come in wearing sweatpants, who cares.

I'm talking about reporters. Again, I can see a somewhat slack atmosphere for sports reporters covering a game but not for news reporters. I don't wear a tie if I don't have to but there's plenty of occasions where I'll need a tie handy, maybe even a jacket.

  7. If I wanted to wear shorts on assignment I'd become a TV cameraman ...

OK, agreed on that one. When I was a reporter, the most casual I would get if I was to be seen in public was jeans and a polo shirt. Mostly, I'd wear khakis and a polo shirt, or khakis and a button-down. If it was necessary, I'd wear a shirt and tie, but it was rarely necessary.

Now I'm on desk. I don't wear sweatpants -- ack! -- but I do wear shorts on weekends, especially now that it's 110 degrees in the daytime here. But mostly it's jeans and a polo.

  9. I don't think you can walk into any newsroom in this country after 9 p.m. and find everyone wearing khakis and dress shirts.

Then what are we talking about here? Zeke's a desker, too; I was agreeing with him.

    You are all fucking diseased.

Now, it's Friday, so I'm wearing jeans to work...
