Athens (Ga.) SE

    No argument but it doesn't fit your criteria. It's a big ol' city with a big ol' college. If it has a pro sports franchise, it isn't really a college town. Again, not disputing the quality of the joint.

    Austin and Durham don't quite qualify either.

    Ann Arbor, Burlington (Vt.), Ithaca, Flagstaff, Charlottesville come to mind as very cool college towns. Haven't seen Athens, though.

    Or don't. You don't have to agree with me, I'm just saying I don't see those cities as college-only kind of towns.
    While you are at it, though: Madison? I'm asking, not saying. Isn't it a pretty big place?

    Madison is an overgrown college town, but the Badgers are THE game in town, so I think it qualifies.

    There are many other places such as Austin, State College, Waco, hell even Dallas, that aren't on the best or worst list. It's all subjective.
    A college town is a college town. Enjoy the experience and move on.

    I'm in my 40s and I still love every trip I get to Athens.

    As far as the SEC goes, I would go

    1. Athens
    2. Nashville
    3. Baton Rouge
    4. Oxford
    5. Auburn
    6. Lexington
    7. Tuscaloosa
    8. Knoxville
    9. Columbia
    10. Fayetteville
    11. Gainesville
    12. Starkville
