Now you know how people feel when intelligent designers want to teach creationism alongside evolution in public school science classes.

Judging by the story it sounds like the atheist group is trying to prevent the cross from displayed, period. Inside or outside. Which goes beyond what most had said on here, even those against displaying it out front, they were fine with it inside a museum. Religious symbol or not, you can't tell the story of that day or that site or the recovery effort without the cross. To include it at the very least inside the memorial or museum where it can still be viewed I think is integral to telling the story of 9/11 and the recovery effort. I don't view it as state sponsoring a religion. To hide it in a closet somewhere because it does have a deep religious meaning to a portion of the population is unbridled censorship and I think an insult to what happened. Pretending something didn't happen doesn't change what actually happened. It is easy to say, well why didn't they pull out a crescent shaped beam, or beams left standing in the shape of a Menorah (which would probably be more likely than a star of David but still highly unlikely), the fact is they didn't. The cross wasn't erected on the site after the attacks, it was part of the building that was left standing. To display it one way or another -- whether it is in cement outside in front or in a display in a museum is going to cost money. So will every other item of historical significance taken from the site to be displayed. History doesn't always roll out in accordance to the bill of rights or the constitution and when recording it, it should not be altered to fit.

We should ban people from wearing crosses as jewelry while on public property. Even those who don't have any idea what a cross represents.
