The News-Messenger Media in Fremont, Ohio, has an immediate opening for an Assistant Editor/Sports Reporter.
An Assistant Editor/Sports Reporter primarily functions as a sports reporter with additional responsibilities to oversee digital first local content generation when the managing editor is unavailable. This process may involve collecting basic information, interviewing individuals, writing breaking, in-depth, feature, and project stories and contributing to video reports. The position requires use of social media and new technologies to quickly share sports news and game events online. It will include the acquisition or development of data (sports statistics) to be entered with software for publication with stories and online. Stories will need to be completed under tight time restraints and for specific target audiences.
In the absence of and/or to assist the managing editor, this position works with the local information center staff, including sports, in producing a complete local news report (text, photo, multimedia) for all platforms in a timely manner. Ensures all breaking news and updates are sent to the Web desk immediately. Key focuses include breaking news, video reporting, watchdog reporting, enterprise reporting and telling great stories. This requires a strong focus on social media engagement by all journalists for idea generation and story development. Content also should be of interest to target audiences, focused on site passion topics as warranted, and uphold Gannett values, including Content Evolution, Principles of Ethical Conduct, mainstreaming/diversity and defending The First Amendment.
