Look, if you have the time and patience, go ahead and wait for the scrum to disappear before you interview someone one-on-one. There's nothing wrong with that. But the person who said, "I don't want them using my quotes" they aren't your quotes. You didn't say them, unless you're quoting yourself. They're the coach's the player's quotes, and anyone who wants to can use them. But if you think you're going to get some dynamic quote from a coach or player after the scrum leaves, you're wrong about 99 percent of the time. And I agree that you can't worry about how others are going to write their story. Yes, it sucks when you look at the neighboring paper and see they had a similar lede that you did, but I'm not going to compromise the way I want to construct a story for anyone. Just do your damn job and don't give two fucks about how another writer may do his/her job.

Finally, spnited, don't go there about the Podunk Press covering junior high volleyball serving its 12,000 readers. That's chickenshit. Just because someone doesn't work for a major metro doesn't mean they aren't good at what they do or couldn't do a better job than some people working at metros.

Talk about why you couldn't insult a musician I DON'T like and switch your name to, maybe, Wham? Or Brittney? Barry Manilow?

Come back the next day is fine if you're working on a feature.
What do you do for your gamer on deadline, just not ask the question you want or need to ask because one of the "idiots" might piggyback or steal "your" quote?
