The Indianapolis Star is seeking an assistant sports editor to supervise the sports copy desk. This person is in charge of the sports operation five nights a week. Excellent news judgment, communication and editing skills, moving copy quickly and frequently to the website, and the ability to make deadline are required.

The ideal candidate is an editor with at least five years of experience in copy and content editing and some production knowledge.

This person will work closely with copy editors, designers, photo, graphics and content editors to pull together a sports section with impact every night.

If interested in this position, please contact Senior Editor, Sports Jim Lefko by e-mail at jim.lefko@indystar.com, by phone at 317-444-6352, or by mail to The Indianapolis Star, P.O. Box 145, Indianapolis, IN 46206-0145.

Good sports market, and the section is OK (tweener size, to some degree). Housing is about as inexpensive as it gets in metro U.S. This position is not one unfamiliar to me, and it would be a fire drill each night. Pack the M&M's and brace yourself for the Gannett shrapnel.

Is it just me, or have there been a ton of ASE openings lately?

Where was Jim Lefko before? Has he been in Indy for a while?

Met Jim in Orlando -- used to date a Schreiner chick! -- and he had a lot of good to say about the paper and the direction it's heading. Heard good things about him from guys who worked for/with him. Seemed like he'd be a good guy to work for.
