It's pretty naive to think that no school has a domestic violence victim with a violent ex-spouse as an employee. Guess we should just paint a scarlet DVV on them, so any business can avoid hiring them.

It astonishes me that anyone would think this woman's being fired is the really sad part of this story.

The woman's whole life is the sad part of the story. She gets victimized by her ex, and the parents, the school and the church pile on.

Cowards, all. Churches are traditionally places where domestic violence victims are be able to seek safety and shelter.

Feels like a lot of problems would be solved if people started negotiating contracts as part of employment. Employers are dicks, and if you don't protect yourself in some way, they will be dicks to you.

Now, I do agree with the sentiment underpinning this. I think the school/diocese should have felt an obligation to find a way for this poor woman to continue earning her livelihood. But not in or near a classroom. Doing so opens up dozens of others to the real possibility of harm. There's no way the church/diocese could square that possibility -- and we're not talking pie-in-the-sky chances here -- with its call to help those in need.

Not possible in the world of at-will employment. Thanks, GOP!

At will employment doesn't prohibit employment contracts. There is not a place in this country that you can't explicitly negotiate an employment contract that gives you job security of any sort.

  9. So the accepted solution to this increasingly common scenario is the fire teachers who might be the target of a potential deranged shooter, rather than a) in the micro, do something about the deranged shooter or b) in the macro, do something about the availability of guns.

When the priest does a sermon about the Good Samaritan story, I hope he notes that his church, and the parents who wanted this teacher out, were the priest and the Levite who came up with all sorts of reasons to justify why they couldn't help the victim at the side of the road.

What's your ballpark on the percentage of grade-school teachers who have employment contracts?

Sounds good in theory. But it never works that way. No one sits around and debates the pros and cons before deciding to commit a crime. Otherwise we wouldn't have such stupidity on the news every day.
