Around which current NHL star would you build a franchise?

I'm interested in seeing which current NHL star that the esteemed SJ hockey brain trust would build

Boyes has scored 40 goals in a season. Gagner may yet develop into something special and Hemskey is a good set up man, but I'm not sure I'd want to build my team around them.

I would like to see Hemskey and Boyes play together.

More brain cramps on my part. I forgot to mention Jack Johnson and Erik Johnson.

I've got no problem with Caps fans thinking their guy is better. I'm certain neither team would trade their guy for the other guy. And there's nothing wrong with that.

But if that above quote is REALLY your argument, it's one heck of an example of blind fanboyism.

    /the one Malkin vote

I'm not a fanboi of either team, but if I'm starting an organization , I'm taking Ovechkin over Crosby 100 times out of 100.

I get that. And you'll never be wrong picking either one of them. But let's not really start making the argument that "Ovechkin can do everything just as well or better as Crosby can except two things -- dive and whine."

    Assists:
    05-06: Crosby +9
    06-07: Crosby +38
    07-08: Crosby +1 (in 29 fewer games)

    08-09 stats
    Crosby: 14-33-47
    Ovechkin: 22-24-46
    Malkin: 15-43-58

If by "building a franchise" you include marketing and selling the product, it's Crosby, for now at least, simply because he communicates better. Ovechkin's English is improving rapidly and you get the sense he has more fun than Crosby. But Sid is better looking and more articulate and if you're "building a franchise" that's part of doing it.

Ovechkin is a dynamite player and probably plays a more complete game than Crosby in that he'll knock a guy off the puck in the corner, take it out and score. Sid's more likely to make the players around him better.

Having talked to both, Crosby seems more calculating with his words; that he's trying not to make a controversial statement. Ovechkin, as you noted, he looks like he's having a great time and his English is getting better. Also, he unafraid to say what he thinks.

I nearly voted for Malkin, but went with Crosby.

No doubt some of Crosby's media savvy -- if that's what you call the ability to talk without really saying anything -- comes from the fact that he's been a client of IMG since he was 14 years old. He's been trained to be bland.

Get Jeff Carter, Mike Richards and Braydon Coburn together. All you need is a goaltender and you've got a legit contender.
