The Army Times came out with their own list of the top 10 Best Military Movies of all time (note 'Top Gun' at #7):

    10. A Bridge Too Far (1977)
    9. The Dirty Dozen (1967)
    8. The Great Escape (1963)
    7. Top Gun (1986)
    6. Letters From Iwo Jima (2006)
    5. The Caine Mutiny (1954)
    4. Glory (1989)
    3. Black Hawk Down (2001)
    2. Patton (1970)
    1. Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Seems like they omitted a few obvious choices. Off the top of my head:

    Apocalypse Now
    Coming Home
    Schindler's List
    The Deer Hunter
    Flags of Our Fathers
    The Thin Red Line
Born on the Fourth of July
    From Here to Eternity
    Three Kings

Not sure you can call Schindler's List a military movie, but what about another Spielberg flick, Saving Private Ryan?

Full Metal Jacket ... the most-quoted military movie ever.

Deer Hunter is barely a military movie.

What about Das Boot? That was a gripping film.

Oh, and Top Gun? ... It's an ARMY Times poll. What the hell do grunts know about fighter pilots?

When I think of Vietnam War movies, Deer Hunter's very high on the list, so I have no problem including it.

My top 10 (criteria for "military" movie = military personnel must play an active role, which includes Deer Hunter but excludes Schindler's List; it can't just be set during a war):

    1. Full Metal Jacket
    2. The Great Escape
    3. Glory
    4. Patton
    5. Saving Private Ryan
    6. The Deer Hunter
    7. Bridge Over The River Kwai
    8. The Patriot
    9. Das Boot
    10. Tora! Tora! Tora!

HM: Crimson Tide, Black Hawk Down, A Bridge Too Far, The Guns of Navarone
  8. Fixed Bayonets
    Guadalcanal Diary

And how is They Were Expendable not on the list?

Remember, there is a difference between a "military" movie and a movie about war. Movies like Three Kings, Coming Home, Apocalypse... weren't as much about military
