    He still may...

REGINA (CP) — Former CFL star Doug Flutie was poised to return to the Toronto Argonauts last week before having a change of heart.

A league source requesting anonymity told Canadian Press Saturday night that Flutie, six times the CFL’s outstanding player, had a plane ticket for Toronto and was scheduled to practise with the Argos last Sunday before talks between himself and the Argos broke down.

The source added that Flutie had reservations about being able to withstand the punishment as a player despite being 43 years old. He spent a total of 21 seasons in professional football with the USFL, NFL and CFL.

Flutie’s return to Toronto would re-unite him with Argos head coach Mike (Pinball) Clemons. The two were teammates during Flutie’s two-year tenure with the Argos.

Clemons said he talked to Flutie about joining the team, and that talks haven’t completely broken off.

“There were just a lot of variables,” Clemons said after the Argonauts’ 26-23 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday. “Our challenges were with the salary management system and different things. The money wasn’t going to be an issue for him.

“But trying to balance that, you know, does it do something to Spergon’s confidence?”

Clemons, however, hasn’t ruled out a return from Flutie, saying “another week may relieve us of challenges.”

Flutie’s near-return to the Argos, who he led to consecutive Grey Cups in 1996 and ’97 before signing with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, was the featured item on CBC’s pre-game show Saturday night.

But talk of Flutie’s potential return to Toronto is certainly likely to heat up once again with the devastating injury to Argos starter Spergon Wynn in Saturday’s game versus the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Wynn took a hellacious helmet-to-helmet hit from Saskatchewan defensive tackle Scott Schultz on the final play of the first half. Wynn’s helmet flew off from the impact of the hit, leaving his head uncovered as he was taken down hard on to the turf at Mosaic Stadium.

Wynn laid on the field for several minutes before being gingerly placed on a stretcher and taken off the field via ambulance. That left No. 3 quarterback Eric Crouch to assume starter’s duties in Wynn’s place.

Flutie’s brother, Darren, a former CFL receiver now working on CBC broadcasts, said he received a text message from Doug, who was watching the game on TV and saw Wynn take the big hit.

The source said the plan was for Doug Flutie to re-sign with Toronto and serve as quarterback insurance while starter Damon Allen recovers from a broken finger on his passing hand. The source added that Flutie was aware he would only remain with the CFL club until Allen was healthy enough to resume playing and that Allen was also told that the Argos were talking about Flutie returning to Canada for the short term.

Clemons, however, says Flutie’s potential return would be about more than serving as a temporary injury fill-in for the Argos.

“Whether he starts or comes off the bench, it does a couple of things,” Clemons said. “It gives you a chance to pay tribute to arguably the most dynamic player in the league’s history, and it gives him a chance to retire as an Argo.

“It’s a chance for the fans to say goodbye and it’s a possible chance for him to get in the game and make a difference. He brings a will and a winning spirit that you can’t describe. He’s one of those guys that just knows how to get it done.”

Flutie spent eight seasons in the CFL with B.C., Calgary and Toronto before returning to the NFL following the `97 season. He spent last season with the New England Patriots before retiring in the off-season to become a football analyst on ESPN’s U.S. college football broadcasts.

Flutie ended his pro career in style, converting the NFL’s first drop-kick for an extra point since the 1941 championship game. He is also one of just seven players in professional football to surpass the 50,000-yards passing plateau with 58,179.

The five-foot-10 quarterback was named the MVP in each of his three Grey Cup victories with the Calgary Stampeders (1992) and Toronto.

Flutie is also well-known for his Hail Mary pass that helped Boston College upset the Miami Hurricanes in 1984, the same year Flutie captured the Heisman Trophy as U.S. college football’s top player.

that cp story really burned the cbc crew, and i cant really blame them. that report is almost word-for-word to what was said on the broadcast.

as for wynn, he was walking around the dressing room postgame. said he felt fine and there was no concussion, although doctors were worried initially that he had broken bones in his neck. he said, however, that he didnt remember the hit.

    it was brutal.
