The 80s were boring, the 90s rocked, and the 00s ... oh, my God, they obviously suck. Come on. Maybe the '10s will be radical. You know?

One difference is, that people back then actually saw government as a force for good, and Vietnam was the first big disillusionment to that concept. Then came the deaths of RFK and MLK, the Nixon resignation, then disco and economic hard times, the spreading of the "welfare queen" myth, the Iran hostage debacle, etc. So now we care little as what is now called a "beast" is being starved, and we expect our government to let us down. But the news churn is so rapid, the crises are only so much garbage-in-garbage out for us anymore.

Thanks. Amazing how that dynamic seemed to make everything more urgent.

    Or so I've read.

These days, people can fight in internet chat rooms.

This ain't the 60s. If we'd been losing WW II in 1944. Roosevelt would have lost. In Vietnam, we were killing kids. In Iraq, terrorists blow up more civilians than we could possibly account for. Our biggest crime? A frat prank or two at Abu-Gharib and flushing a Koran down the toilet. Hell, a bunch of liberal athiests in here would do that with a Bible in a hearbeat.
