Are farewell columns self-serving?

    Sure they're self-serving. But a writer who has made a connection with his readers should say goodbye with a column. I wouldn't like it if my favorite columnist for the past 20 years suddenly quit and didn't offer some sort of goodbye column. If your readers don't care that you're leaving, then you weren't doing a very good job anyway.
