Are Americans hostile toward knowledge?

    A co-worker refers to public schools as "socialist dens of illiteracy." He grew up going to Catholic schools, which given recent revelations I'm sure were far superior. Then again, he was in Texas.

  3. I think we've been doing that for a long time, and for a lot of money, if my property-tax bill is any indication. And where I live, I know we're not getting much bang for it.

    The public schools in most major cities generally suck because they're not funded well; the way we fund schools in this country (property taxes making up a large proportion of the funding) is absurd. The biggest factor in student achievement is parental income; more affluent areas fund their schools much better than less affluent areas.
