HUGE ups to The Tuscaloosa News -- a paper I am slightly familiar with ;) -- for winning its first Triple Crown! Actually, a Grand Slam with a Web win as well. Special HUGE UPS to Andrew Carroll and Aaron Suttles, who also won writing awards from there.

That paper has gotten close to the Triple Crown in recent years, and finally pushed through this year. Proud of them.

A super special congrats to Nate Ryan, who was my mentor on the NASCAR beat when we were in Richmond. A very well-deserved top-10 in game story in the over-250K category. Rock on.

Just went and looked at the APSE site for the full lists. Congrats to MARK Story of Lexington (incorrectly called Mike on the site) as well as the late, great David Poole of Charlotte and the awesome Dave Kallmann of Milwaukee.

    Mark Lazerus (40-100K feature) ... it's about time. :)

And much love to Josh Moon of the Montgomery Advertiser.

    Well, congrats to everyone, actually.

I believe Mr. Lazerus was also recognized last year.

So it could be said that . . . Lazerus has risen again.

    HA! I kill me!

He was. And brags about it all the time. Amazing how cocky that guy is.

Few cockier. Like Luke Skywalker right after he shot down his first TIE fighter.

  8. The APSE site amended its story to reflect that 10 newspapers -- not nine -- won Triple Crowns. They omitted the Seattle Times in their original version:

    2010 APSE WINTER JUDGING CONVENTION
Kansas City Star, Dallas Morning News among 10 papers to win Triple Crown

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Ten newspapers won the coveted Triple Crown in the Associated Press Sports Editors’ writing and section contests that ended Wednesday.

The Kansas City Star and the Dallas Morning News, competing in the over-250,00 circulation division, won Top 10 recognition for their daily, Sunday and special sections. Joining them were: the Seattle Times; the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and New Orleans Times-Picayune in the 100,000-250,000 category; The State (Columbia, S.C.) and the North County Times (Escondido, Calif.) in the 40,000-100,000 circulation division; Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News in under-40,000; and the Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World and the Marietta (Ga.) Daily Journal in under-20,000.

Congrats to the fine folks in Decatur, IL for finally getting a little love. Well deserved, long overdue.
