    Smile a lot.
    Make eye contact at all times.
    Be inquisitive- and be mindful of your own body language.
    This is no different than taking a girl out for the first time.

    Fart makes some excellent, often overlooked points.

    Confidence.

    If you're not a confident person, play one. Not cocky or arrogant, but confident. No one wants to hire a wet napkin.

    Any advice on what sort of openings on here work and what don't?

    While some of the openers under sympathetic and confident seem like they'd be catchy, attention grabbing ledes, I also wonder if they'd be enough to turn off perspective SE's.
