The other factor is Schmidt in the NL West & Zito in the AL west. Schmidt was wise to stay there, and in a good pitchers park. A move to the AL would have made him seem like he was regressing even if he pitched as well.

Zito may not be a lightweight next to Schmidt, but he's not a safe enough bet at this point to warrant the kind of large, long-term financial commitment it will take to get him. His numbers have gotten progressively worse.

If I had to pick one of them for the next three years only, I'd rather have Schmidt, even with the increased injury risk. Schmidt's career numbers are misleading. He was a pretty lousy pitcher in Atlanta and Pittsburgh, but once the light went on he became a very good one.

Tell that to the Giants. Rumor in San Francisco last week had Giants offering Zito a six year, $100 million contract.

The same Giants who just bid against themselves to give Bonds $16 million.

The grass is always greener, I guess.

  5. But he was in pinstripes -- the Astros wear them too.
