AP style vs. proper names

We have a brewing argument in our newsroom -- OK, a minor disagreement -- and I just wanted to get a few opinions about it.
I covered a baseball game yesterday involving a team named Mt. Salus. All of the school's literature, its rosters, its web site, every reference to it by the state association, everything I've ever seen, says "Mt." Not "Mount", but the abbreviated version.
ME sees it today and yells at my SE. AP style says "Mount" in all usages, and that's what it must be, she said.

So what's correct? I can understand spelling it out if it's something like a mountain or a town with "Mount" in the name. But when it's a proper name like that, is it OK to abbreviate? Is it actually wrong to spell it out?

It is what the team and the school say it is.

    I'm with these guys.

    "Mount" refers to mountain style.

    Not schools.

If the school calls itself Mt., that's what it should be.

the ap stylebook is a suggestive book, not law.

and i'll fry in hell before my section runs the letters: RBIs.

sometimes a man just has to make a stand, my friend.

  8. TP, if it weren't for our similar taste in starlets, I'd put a plague on your underwear drawer for starting that debate again.

And RBIs is just fine, you jaghole. ;)

i have to admit that this is the first time i've ever been called a jaghole.

i'm going to have to google that.

It has something to do with an aversion to using the term "RBIs."
