And this tweet from the chief operating officer of USA Today Sports Images

    Bob Rosato @BobRosato
It is with deep sadness to report we have lost AP photographer Dave Martin, an icon in photojournalism, tonight at the chick fil a bowl.

RIP. We always really counted on him at SEC Media Days for football and he always delivered.

Dave was a great guy and great photographer. Always hustling, always getting the photo, always being in the spot for the shot others wished they'd shot. RIP, Dave.

He was a great photographer. But what he did to just help people. It just makes me sick.

Back in the day, we couldn't send people to shoot Alabama or Auburn hoops. He'd always make sure something was lined up, "Sure. I'll call Tuscaloosa (or Auburn). We'll make sure we get ya something."

He'd been overseas with the troops. In the middle of it in Katrina. And passed away shooting a damn football game.

Makes me think about Jimmy Smothers, longtime sports editor out of Gadsden and probably 80 years old by now. Once told me (at a game), I hope I go sitting in a press box. "Well, damn Smut. Let's just don't do it tonight," I said.

I don't run across nearly as many of his photos as I once did. Makes me sick that I won't ever see any more.

Having gotten home from the gathering I was at tonight, I turned on ESPN and see that the replay of the game is in the final three minutes. It's going to feel ghoulish to see the post-game handshakes and look for him.

Edit: The Deadspin link in Moddy's post shows ESPN video that shows him flat on his back on the field, but the replay of the game shows a completely different shot at the same time on the clock. I wonder if they subbed out a different shot on the rerun.

I remember seeing tons of Dave Martin pics roll across the wire.
He was a regular at late-summer SEC Media Days, too, I believe.
RIP and condolences to the Martin family.
