It's a nice idea, but as long as there's oil in the Middle East, encouraging democracy is quixotic.

We already have a bedrock of democracy in the Middle East. It's called Israel. And all it's neighbors want to wipe it off the map.

The fluffy, writhing little freaks are all Nunavuti nationalists who have their beady, soulless eyes on Quebec and Newfoundland. Democratic imperialists, indeed.

Oil and democracy can't co-exist? That'd be a surprise to top oil producers like the United States and Canada.

Well, the U.S. and Canada aren't run by royal families, either.

Neither are Iraq, Iran, Libya or Egypt, among many others.

On topic, I feel that democracy is best encouraged by fostering economic justice, education and- most difficult of all in the developing world- combating corruption. Having an election in an undemocratic society without major, major social change as well won't bring about democracy.

So you're saying Israel should give up democracy for peace?

Bottom line, promoting democracy in that part of the world requires a commitment beyond our capabilities at this time.

    Strawman much?

Agreed. You can't force democracy on a people who don't want it and/or aren't ready to do it themselves.

If that is indeed a quote -- which I assume it is -- it, ipso facto, can't be a strawman, right?

Which describes much of the Middle East and other places that have traditional, hierarchical cultures that have other priorities than democracy...priorities that have little to do with individual liberties or political democracy.
