Mexican authorities apparently say he was taking a shortcut through that elevator shaft. However, the portion of the Poynter website previously occupied by Romenesko links to a story en Espanol.

Is there any question that 'Mexican authorities' receive the same media training as the former Iraqi Minister of Information?

Just ask anyone who's gotten out of Juarez and back to El Paso. The Mexican gangs don't fool around.

That airport shooting was just in the last week or two, wasn't it?

Well, reaching terminal velocity IS the shortest way down.
Seriously, how do you take a shortcut THROUGH an elevator shaft?

Yeah, that is not even close to the case.

Unless they're saying he was cutting through the shaft at basement level, you don't.
