To grasp its business model, though, you need to picture a galley rowed by slaves and commanded by pirates.

I am unaware of anyone being forced against their will to write for HuffPo; to the contrary, as I understand it, it's a pretty prestigious gig.

What happens when that pool of exploitable surplus labor dries up — as it will with time — is anybody's guess, but the smart money would bet on something that isn't pretty.

What reason do we have to believe the surplus labor will dry up? The conditions of the last five years have been as bad as possible, and the talent pool is only growing.

A reporter with zero business sense and a belief that companies should pay reporters well because, well, they used to and they still should dammit! Those kinds of pieces are all too common.

AOL is already working its magic with HuffPo...

...over the last few days, when you click on several of the entertainment features on the HuffPo front, you get sent to AOL, where you are (a) first met with an annoying lightbox pop-up and (b) then have to hunt around a very messy front page to find the story you were trying to read...if it's there at all.

Judging by the comments on the one below, HuffPo may soon be going the way of AOL Chat!

Arianna really has a lot of respect for bloggers:

Huffington: People ask why don't bloggers get paid? Why don't people ask "Why don't couch potatoes get paid for watching TV?" #AspenIdeas
