Anyone know anything about being a "technical writer"?

The technical writing class I took in college was the most humbling writing experience I've had. The professor ran out of red ink marking up everyone's papers.

    Precise language. Clear. Simple.

We worked in groups and received low marks in groups.

We took apart a basic clothes iron and had to write a description of its assembly. I had a line in there about something that "serves to" do this or that. He circled the key word and, in the margin, he wrote, "Tennis anyone?"

He used to say "The meek shall inherit the earth: 6 by 6 by 2."

He routinely embarrassed us, but at least sometimes he did it with style (a bitter, cynical, jaded style, but a style).

Our major project had a cover page, and the names of everyone who contributed were listed vertically near the bottom. He circled that stack of names and wrote, "Names aren't the only things that come in piles."
