I've been looking at this for some time, off and on, and my recent switch over to open source software (Linux) has me looking a lot harder, because I'm not entirely pleased with any of the media software/music managers available over here.

Essentially, Songbird is an open-source, cross-platform answer to software like iTunes, built on top of the Mozilla Firefox framework by a group of developers whose previous projects include Winamp and Musicmatch Jukebox (AKA the "Yahoo Music Engine").

It looks rather like iTunes, and I suspect Apple's flesh-eating attorneys may have something to say about that eventually. iPod support has already shown up (although the newest beta apparently breaks that, but it should be corrected quickly).

Songbird site is here. More information here and here.
