Pitt, I believe, offered free Liberty Bowl tickets to students in 1997. I know they sold Insight Bowl tickets half-off in 2000.

$55 bucks to freeze your ass off in Boise? What the hell are they putting in the potatoes there?

Now here's a fallen powerhouse with its priorities straight. No trip for you, Marching Chiefs.

  6. I doubt it was Boone. First of all, he NEVER gives money anonymously. He wants EVERYONE to know how much he has given. There's a reason the friggin' stadium has his name on it now, because that's how he wanted it.
Plus Boone isn't known for helping the small people like that. He uses his money to buy the things he wants and would like to see done. This doesn't seem to fit his M.O.
It could be Garth Brooks. He gives a lot of money and you never hear a word about it.

I read somewhere that MTSU is giving away tickets to the Motor City Bowl... Apparently not a ton of interest in spending the day after Christmas in Detroit...

even if the free tickets came with free airfare and a hotel room, i doubt too many students would take advantage of the offer. i figure the only students going would be those whose parents are diehards who go to every bowl game. and i'm sure there will be one or two wacky groups making a long road trip but the student section would figure to be pretty empty.

Yeah, when your school has played for the national title within the last five years, I'm just guessing too many people won't be traveling to watch a horseshit 6-6 team play anywhere much less in Boise...

Not a knock at Boise, I've covered a few NCAA Tournaments there and had a blast each time, but I doubt people are going to leave South Florida to watch a meaningless bowl game.

Plus, Miami fans don't support the team when they're winning titles, why would they jump on the bandwagon now?

I get that. What astounds me is that members of the public are expected to gack up $55 for a bowl in Boise. Talk about not knowing your place in the pecking order. The local startup game here will be damn lucky to break 25k in the stands with two regional teams and tickets at $30 apiece (which drops to $20 apiece with the purchase of 4 or more). At $55, they may as well play the game on a studio soundstage, which is about the model ESPN is going for anyway.

But Boone might have a motive here if it makes it look like OSU has great fans that travel well to bowl games. It could help land the Cowboys someplace better in the future. Plus there were nine bowl eligible teams in the Big 12 and only eight spots, so buying all the tickets pretty much assured the OSU wouldn't be the team staying home.
