I live in South Florida. I see cockroaches. I see really big cockroaches. I was in New Orleans for business a few weeks ago. In my hotel room there was a cockroach on one of those bench things at the end of my bed that was so big I could have put a leash on it and walked it down the street and people would have just thought it was the world's ugliest dog.

There was also what I assumed to be a homeless guy sleeping by the fire exit on my floor (a different floor than the one with the cockroach room) in the morning.

Don't tell Mrs. Whitman about my trip if you want to go to New Orleans. Or tell her if you prefer another location.

In case you're thinking New England: The Grand Point North music festival is coming up in Burlington, Vt. in a couple weeks. It's a fun two-day event in a park next to Lake Champlain. I'm not going this year, but I've been to it a couple times in the past. In your free time, you can go sailing on the lake or for a drive down to Ben & Jerry's.

I hear they make you wear a jacket at the Greenbrier casino after like 4 p.m. or something.

    Fuck that.

  8. I wouldn't be surprised.

In December they run specials and you get a room from about $130... Of course, you are still going to shell out $50 for breakfast, $100 for lunch and $300 for dinner and $$$$$$ if you want to shop or do anything else at the resort. It's VERY nice. Beautiful place. But you pay for it.

However, if you really want to do the bunker tour, you don't have to stay at the resort.

We stayed at the Homestead Resort just over the border in Hot Springs, Va. (really cool, old place) and stopped by the Greenbrier on the way back and asked to do the bunker tour.

We may have had to pay a few bucks for the tour, can't remember. But it was a great way to see the resort and the bunker and all without checking our wallets at the door.

  10. That's right.
You used to be able to drive in and drive around the place and walk around the resort and grounds. I don't think you can do that anymore. You need a reason to be there.
A round of golf there runs about $320.

Seattle, Minneapolis, Toronto, and Montreal are all great long weekend trips.

I know you said domestic only, but Canada is practically America, unless one of you doesn't have a passport -- which you can get pretty quickly now. My wife just got hers in about a week without doing anything to expedite it.

Porter flies from MDW to Toronto City Airport for reasonable fairs, and a free shuttle takes you downtown in minutes.

If Canada is an option, Vancouver is another great weekend destination.

BTW, if done right, your potential choice of New Orleans is also excellent.
