John Edwards and Tiger Woods might disagree with you on credibility of The Enquirer

    Too hilarious.

Hope some with their heads in the sand are enjoying the charming (record-breaking) weather this month in the Northeast . . . because nobody else is.

    Hardly, in and of itself.

Sustained, near-record heat? Just another brick in the load.

Yes, by all means, smear the accuser.

Just because you want it to be true doesn't mean it is. If she's making it up, and in this case the probability of that is higher (though not definite, granted) than in many cases, she deserves to be smeared.

She doesn't deserve to be smeared any more than anyone should assume Al Gore is guilty. There is a chance (a small one, at least) she is telling 100 percent truth. There is a chance (a big one) that Gore isn't guilty of anything illegal. There is a chance (I'll give it at least 50/50 odds) that Gore booked a $550 massage under the name "Mr. Stone" and hinted that a happy ending wouldn't be unappreciated.

So while no one should be impugning Gore on such incredibly flimsy evidence, and no one should be smearing the accuser (because smear the accuser attacks are all too common in legitimate case of sexual assault), it still is pretty fun for a lot of people (well, at least me) to sit on the sidelines and gawk and chuckle at the idea of Mr. Stone showing up wrapped in his oversized towel.

I don't know if this woman's claim is legitimate or not, but I think we need to remember -- or be aware of -- some things.

Sexual predators look for people with less credibility than themselves. The threats that, "no one will believe you" are part of the terror, part of the power over the victim that the predator craves, and part of how they get away with it.

Catholic Priests don't molest the well adjusted kid from a good family.

Politicians don't pressure their biggest fundraiser's daughter.

Some people will find Gore's accuser unreliable just because she's a masseuse.

With predators who are rich, famous and/or good looking, there's often an even higher bar to clear for accusers. Many will believe that "she wanted it" or that he can "get it any time he wants, so why would he force someone".

If the woman's story has holes in it, fine, point those out. Or, if there's exculpatory evidence, it should receive the same attention -- or more -- than the accusations.

But we shouldn't drag a woman through the mud just because she's not the homecoming queen. The odds are that a victim of such a crime won't be.

Who are you going to believe, the Monsignor, or the troubled youth he was "counseling"? The President, or the intern? The star quarterback, or the cheerleader with the bad reputation? The lacrosse player or the stripper? The All-Pro tight end, or the drunk teenager?

It's the fact that matter, not the reputations of either party.

So what did Roethlisberger do to the cheerleader?

Ha! That one was a hypothetical.

But he could have been included a well.

So could the MVP guard and the slutty, bi-polar hotel clerk.

I wonder how much more there's going to be to this story:
