I always thought Guy stood head and shoulders above the other punters at that time, but when you look at the stats, he may not have even been the best punter of that era. He averaged 42.4, led the league in punting 3 years. Jerrel Wilson averaged 43.0 and led the league five times. Wilson and Stenerud sure gave KC a formidable kicking game.

I do recall Guy being a contingency QB option. In 84, the Raiders were playing in Chicago when that scary Bears defense was just coming into its own. Hampton, Singletary, McMichael and friends knock 2 Raider QBs silly and out of the game. Seem to recall Guy warming up on the sideline and getting instructions from the coaching staff, all the while looking like a guy on the way to his execution. Don't think he played, or if he did, it was handoff and pray not to get hit doing that.

    Good point, James T.

Up until his death, Wilson was a little bothered he fell under the radar due to Guy. Ironically, Wilson and Guy both played at Southern Miss.

The Stenerud-Wilson kicking combo is one of the best in NFL history.

Wilson was a great punter, and it goes back to the "fame" thing. His best years were in the 1960s in the AFC...less of an audience and the Chiefs fell off the map in the 1970s. People didn't watch. Guy was on TV a lot more in the 1970s and 80s when the NFL really blossomed.
