Tigers make it in and Yanks don't, it's Mags. Otherwise, ARod. But ARod has cooled considerably since the All-Star break. Even his batting average is 22 points lower. Other than home runs, I take Mags. He's continuing to produce, has a butt load more doubles and hits even as the Tigers tank - and his batting average is actually higher WITHOUT Sheffield in the lineup.

Even with his average dipping since the All-Star Break, it's still .312. And he's hitting clutch home runs like he did tonight. Tough to imagine anyone else winning it at this point.

A-Rod's average has plunged to .312 from the .316 he was at at the break!

    Pre-break....320 ABs, 30 HR, 86 RBI, .316, OBP .412 (85 team games)
    Post break... 187 ABs, 18 HR, 48 RBI, .304, OBP .422 (55 teams games)

    Terrible drop off!

Ortiz shouldn't even be in the discussion this year, as already pointed out his overall numbers are down and unlike previous years he has not done well with the game on in the line. Mike Lowell, 100+ RBI is the closest thing the Sox have to an MVP candidate. Not bad for a guy who was thrown into the Beckett-Ramirez deal as a salary dump.

    It's A-Rod in a landslide.

The Yankees should have traded him at the deadline. At this point, he'll be batting .310 at the end of the year. No when to cut ties, Big Stein.

Because when a player hits .353 with 26 home runs, 44 doubles, 120 RBIs and scores 102 runs with 26 games to play, he becomes a legitimate candidate. Magglio will have a tough time beating A-Rod, but it's by no means an impossible task.

it's a-rod, magglio and mike lowell, who has been unbelievable this year. but a-rod and magglio are far and above everyone. the wild card winner gets the MVP.

Warp3 is how many wins a player is above a fictitious replacement player calculated over a full 162 games. So this year, the Yankees win about 13.8 more games than they would if they had a replacement player (below average at everything) playing third.
Since all players are compared to the same fictitious replacement player, you can compare players to other players. Ergo, A-Rod is worth about 3 more wins to a team this year than Maggs is, 5 more wins than David Ortiz.
Basically it's this: http://baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?mode=viewstat&stat=193 expanded so it's over 162 games.

A-Rod will win in a landslide. Hard to believe anyone else is even in the equation ... unless A-Rod pulls an 0-for-30 down the stretch or something like that.
