Alou vindicates Bartman: "I wouldn't have caught it anyway."

  1. Don't know if this is a D-B and really don't care.

    From Philly.com's NL notes:

It's not Alou's fault Bartman became a pariah; it's the fault of all those whiny idiot Cubs fans who conveniently forget that if Alex Gonzalez could catch, the Cubs would have choked in the World Series, not the NLCS.

  3. Alou's full quote:

"Everywhere I play, even now, people still yell, `Bartman! Bartman!' I feel really bad for the kid," Alou said. ``Know what the funny thing is? I wouldn't have caught it, anyway."

Mariotti questions, then, why did he throw down his glove like Tanner from the Bad News Bears.

It was all Bernie Mac's fault anyway...

Why wouldn't you throw a tantrum? Maybe you can convince the ump there was interference. It was his only shot.

One day into the season and Marriotti pumps out a "Cubs are doomed" column. That has to be a record, even for him.

What's incredible is how no sportswriter has written this opinion unsolicited.

As assuredly as Alou was MVP of the 1997 World Series, he never would have caught that.

  10. He even writes them during the offseason.

Are you kidding? As you can tell from LJB's pics, that ball was well within his reach. Alou's a good guy for trying to get the kid off the hook, but he's full of it. He would have made the catch.
