All-purpose open-wheel (F1, IRL) racing thread

Good analysis. We all hate the sideshow but I can kind of understand why NBC doesn't treat it like a race -- the race fans are already turning in and they'll bitch but they're not not going to tune in. The task is to try to catch casual viewers and that just gets tougher every year. The 500 is a regional event that thinks it's national, and the most famous open-wheeler on the property is still Mario Andretti.

The blackout is beyond antiquated and I agree people are insulted. IMS clings to it for a couple thousand general admission fans who wake up on race morning and if the forecast isn't great, they would say "let's just stay home and watch." It's asinine. Central Indiana fans watching live won't singlehandedly solve the rating woes, but it does provide a bump and every tenth of a point counts when you're bleeding out.

Of course I understand the reasons why, but my point is if you're going to have closed-cockpit and closed-wheel cars that's fine, but just don't expect fans to tune in to watch "the greatest spectacle in racing" if they see windshields with tear-away sheets and racing that's radically more boring than they grew up on.
F1 has a halo but you can still see the drivers and you can still see the wheels spinning freely and there are no windshields to be cleaned.

When they were introduced, I liked the windshield more than the halo, but I agree that it does look a bit flimsy. Feels like something they probably should work on in future designs.

No argument here. But the effort to try to make people give a fuck leads to decisions like giving the award to a popular guy who crashed out of the race (and not because some jabroni ran into him, either).

Dammit, I can't stop arguing about it. They got me.

NBC would just pick up the Sky-produced coverage, as it does for some British Open golf coverage, now that Comcast owns Sky as well. That wasn't the case previously.

    Probably, yes.

Are they going to go commercial-free like ESPN has? Because their track record suggests the broadcasts would be racing-free.

Racing rights ain't free, unlike the Dire Straits' checks.

Right, and the type of sponsorship deal ESPN has with Mother's may not be enough to support commercial-free racing under the new, more expensive rights deal.

But if NBC tries to copy its Indycar broadcast style it will be pretty disastrous.

"Hey, y'all! Dale JUNIOR from Monaco! My sister's name is Kelley, just like the lady who used to be princess here! Where you at, Rutledge?"

"I'm down here on a duck boat in the middle of the casino pool, Junior! Yeehaw!"

"Maybe we can get some of them rich folks to let us on them big fishing boats later!"
