Mitch re-runs, in its entirety and without comment, a column 22 years old. ::) ::)

No paragraph to draw the parallels between 1985 and 2008. No cautionary quote from Santayana, etc etc. The Lions haven't played for three weeks, and won't play for seven months.

Just a 22-year-old column for your reading enjoyment.

Thank goodness Brad Renfro's not around to read this.

Well, there is an explainer on the side of that link.

"During his 22-plus years at the Free Press, Mitch has become the must-read journalist in Detroit by using his columns to address the universal topics of life — death, love, sex, power, money, race and, of course, victory and defeat. After luring the reader into the tale, Mitch delivers his opinions with the quick force of a knockout blow."

    Now release the hounds.

What, did he die or something? I loved his work in the Houston Brads!

(this is either SportsJournalists.com's first meme of 2008, or it'll be grounds for an automatic thread-locking by 3 a.m.)

I am looking forward to the column from St. Louis. It truly is his most memorable. Ever.
Although, there was his series from the Masters that so endeared him to his readers that, to this day, he has never covered another golf tournament.

Is there a story behind that?

And the column's only 19 or so years old; Fontes took over in 1988.

Qualifying only if all of this "memoir" was indeed, entirely and wholly, true.

Which I'm not and never have been convinced it is.

And just think ... Albom is now required reading in high schools and colleges.

My son, a college freshman, had to read "Five People" this past fall semester. My daughter, a high school junior, must read 'Tuesdays' for English class this spring.

Albom over 'Beowulf' and 'The Scarlet Letter'? Give me a break.

When my kids asked me about Albom, I told them about the St. Louis column. My son got a good laugh when he saw Albom on "The Sports Reporters.'

My daughter said the English teacher, who's quite a prima donna, raves about Albom in class. I'm debating if I should call B.S. on Teach. If I do, I'll send her a nice e-mail with a link to the APSE page about the column fallout (I posted the link below). Then I'll tell my daughter to let me know if Teach decides to retaliate against her.

Brad Renfro was a healthy 3-year-old toddler when Mitch first typed this column.

It may be time to re-think the whole "I want to have kids" idea.
