AL Cy Young

Of course, last year's winner played on one of the worst teams in baseball. Hernandez, compared to Sabathia and Price, has a lower ERA, more strikeouts, less walks and has pitched more innings.

If the Cy Young is all about the best pitcher, I don't think there's any question who that is. The Cy Young is not like the MVP, where team success is factored into the discussion. This is simply, who's the better pitcher? It's Hernandez. The numbers back it up.

But Lee was 8-3 with the M's. Why isn't Hernandez at least .500?

That is the arguement that will really hurt Hernandez's chances.

    Bad luck. No other answer.

In 13 starts this year, Hernandez's team has scored two runs or less. He is 1-9 in those games with a 3.14 ERA.

    It's happened eight times to Lee. He's 1-4, 2.49.

How is Hernandez suppose to control the run support he gets?

Last year's Cy winner was 16-8 for that horrible team, which probably translates to 43-3 with a good team. He had to practically shut out everyone in September to get there.

The Mariners scored an average of 4.85 runs per game in Lee's starts.
The Mariners have scored an average of 3.09 runs per game in Harnandez's starts.

Hernandez has given up two runs or less and gone at least seven innings in eight different games this season, but finished with a loss or no decision. Tough to blame Hernandez for not winning more games when he's done his part.

No luck, good luck, bad luck, he has to get over .500.

There has never been a starting pitcher win the award who was anywhere near .500. I'm sure there were some unlucky pitchers on bad teams back then as well.

So you believe the CY Young is a team stat then? You asked why Hernandez isn't 500, Oz points out the difference in run support and you completely ignore it.

Sabathia is going to win the Bob Welch/Lamarr Hoyt/Steve Stone way, the most wins, ERA be damned. He's a fine pitcher but he's got a Yankee premium going for him.

I believe Lee is the studliest pitcher right now but he's had a couple of tough starts for the Rangers that have not turned into W's (last start I think he went into the 8th with a 5-1 lead and gave up 5; 99% of the pitchers in the league would have been sat down).

Closest a pitcher ever got to winning the Cy Young with a losing record was Ryan in the early 80's(?) when he won the ERA title.

Better than in 1973 when Tom Seaver won five less games than the league leader yet won the award?
