That doesn't help his cause, at least in my eyes.

    Just so we're clear...

Everyone here thinks that each race has precisely the same exceptionalities, and weaknesses?

yeah, except for fags, wetbacks, spades and kikes

That's a pretty slippery slope you just stepped out on there, Simon.

And just so we're clear...in this case, Campanis was talking about somebody saying that members of one racial group lack the ability to be managers or executives in major league baseball. How is that anything but racist? Even if it is just an ignorant, confused old man, rather than a hateful one, as others have argued...ignorance is not a defense against racism.

So... if he had said instead that white people didn't have the innate capability to win marathons in the summer heat, or play cornerback.... you would have asked for his head then, also?

I didn't ask for his head the first time...but I was only 14 at the time.

And it is not the same thing to question an entire race's mental capacity or leadership skills as it is to question athletic ability. And if you are talking about the necessities to be a manager or GM, that is about mental capacity and leadership skills.

And the fact that there are double standards out there does not justify racism.

Interestingly, Campanis was not born in the Southern U.S.

Ignorance is the basis of a lot of racism.

    Mr Cowbell,

Actually Carlos Lopes (Portugal) was a monster in the heat of the 1984 Oly marathon, holding on to edge out an Irishman whose complexion was as white as the insides of an uncooked potato. And Englishman finished third even though 2+ hours on the street were the equivalent of running in deepfryer full of chip fat. Africans were, as anyone in X-country circles will say, up the chute.

Italians have an enviable record in hot weather Oly and WC marathons (Baldini, Boldin and, if you open it up, deCastella).

Funnily enough, if African runners have a great recent record in cold weather marathons (Boston, etc).

It was Sugar Ray Robinson who faded in the heat at 175.

    But I digress.

    YHS, etc

Still waiting for this to be explained ...

    Nice job with marathons....

Maybe you can handle cornerbacks, too.

And, to someone else, mental acuity is a physical trait, just as much as twitch muscles.
