Inasmuch as it's a French plane, flying from Brazil to France, and missing in Brazilian and/or Senegalese airspace, I'm not sure where our military enters into it.

So are we talking about a Payne Stewart-type situation here?

No idea. Wording of CNN's report is just not clear enough. I guess if it's cabin pressure, it could be...

If we have the ability to find them and do not, then the world should hate us.

If there are Americans onboard.....we need to go find them.

    Find them?

You mean their bodies? (Not to be crass, but I think any operation will go from "rescue" to "recovery" very quickly, and where's the need to find bodies 4,000 feet deep in the ocean (or whatever)?

I haven't seen any passenger info yet. Has anyone else?

And, chalk me up for not being quite as sanguine about the US military being able to find engines, a black box or anything else that will give us answers embedded in the mucky floor somewhere out in the middle of the ocean.

People at least need to know what happened. (lightening vs. human error)

Are you sure about this? I thought planes used GPS for navigational purposes, but I didn't think they were tracked this way.

The NYT is indicating the plane went missing in a gap in which there is no radar coverage.

So, and I only ask this because I have no idea, isn't that dangerous as hell?

I think touching the spinning blades could screw you up as well.

    Well, yeah...

But it just seems to me that much static is hazardous...
