WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- A major U.S. AIDS treatment group plans to file a lawsuit Monday that accuses drug giant Pfizer Inc. of illegally promoting recreational use of its blockbuster impotence pill Viagra.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) told Reuters it wants Pfizer (Charts) to be barred from marketing Viagra as a lifestyle or sexual enhancement drug. The nonprofit organization said Pfizer's actions had led to risky behavior by men and an increase in HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

"Pfizer has created and contributed to the perception of Viagra as a safe, sexy, lifestyle, recreational drug, to be frequently used regardless of the degree, or even existence of" erectile dysfunction, the group said in draft legal documents.

Shit like this is just an example of how some people think everyone else is stupid. 'What? Viagra's not a party favor, but it's for erectile dysfunction? Oooh boy, glad you clued me on that, AHF! I was going to pass them out at my kid's birthday bash next week!'

Just... STFU. You might be doing good work with AIDS, but... STFU.

  2. Better idea ... Killick: STFU. Have you ever actually seen any of these ads for Viagra and the like? They're marketing drugs like they're friggin' candy. About time someone calls them out on it.

Bruce, how does that possibly matter when you can only get them by perscription? Huh? They can show the fucking things coming out of Pez dispensers and it won't change how they're used -- by guys who can't get it up who have gotten them from their doctor. Of course, I was just assuming any intelligent member of society would realize this.

Sure, Pfizer markets the hell out of Viagra (Big Pharma at work), but it's not like you pick them up at the cash register like freaking Tic Tacs. They require a doctor's prescription. Once the prescription is filled, whatever happens beyond that outside of side effects is probably on the patient.

So saying Viagra causes the spread of AIDS is a fairly huge leap of logic. It's like blaming Ben Bernanke for the nail in my tire.

Anyone with an email address can get that prescription though.

... and, not for nuthin', doesn't the AHF have more important things to spend their political capital on? Anyway, I've vented. Done.

I do not KNOW this, not at all. But I have been told - credit the pipeline - that Viagra is very easy to get.
