AH Belo shutters Quick

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by lone star scribe, Jul 27, 2011.

  1. AH Belo, parent company of The Dallas Morning News, announced today it was shutting down its 8-year-old free daily, Quick. A kind of TDMN Light, Quick was fostered to compete with another free daily in 2003, AM Journal Express. It never made money, and never really found an audience apparently.

Nine staffers were laid off. They've been told they can apply for other openings at TDMN, but guess what? There aren't any.

Over the years, they've gutted another paper they own, The Providence Journal. They still do some great work, but they're largely gone from a statewide paper with great coverage to something more Providence-centric that will parachute into the suburbs a couple times a week.

To a degree, the same applies to another Belo property as well ...

BTW, in other DMN news, Rick Gosselin has moved from NFL columnist to general sports columnist. I guess this is how they're replacing JJT.

  7. Gosselin is damn good. And given that everybody is cutting national writers, it's a good move for him.
