Unfortunately, the People of Agate are expendable if you cut or stop running agate.

They're the lowest-paid folks in the department. They'll be around after all of us are gone.

    HEY! I resemble that comment.

  4. 3-5 at any given time, and we wouldn't get a single sports section out w/o them.
We've had a nice run of quality, too. We've been very lucky.

Got a good handful still here.
Here's an ode to a former clerk (of many) former LANG columnist Paul Oberjuerge hired.

I'm one of 3 at our paper - never more or less.

When I started 2 were full time, but now none are full time.

In our 36K universe, one of the eight people on the staff is an entry level guy (with a Masters) whose primary responsibility, five nights a week, is to run the scoreboard page.

A huge part of that is keeping the phones under control.

    Nice try, Dools.

But you smacked of total fail on that effort.

We have, I think, four part-timers, two of which basically handle the agate. One guy is on agate any night he works, the other one fills in the days the first guy is off.

The main agate guy is amazing. You could ask him who finished third in the AL MVP vote in 1972 and he'd know. It's insane. He's a little weird :)D) but he's gold money. And the agate is rarely even slightly off when he does it.

The other guy is far too good to be wasting his time on agate, and I keep telling him he needs to get out and take advantage of his skills. So far he hasn't listened.
