We have laws that protect women, minorities and gays. Are they somtimes enforced sporadically? Yes. Are there some bad people who discriminate or otherwise do harm to those groups? Yes.
Does our government sanction discrimination and even physical harm and murder to those people? No. That's enough of a difference for me for us to be morally superior to those countries that do.

Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation remains legal in more than a few states.

In related news, I just ran across an editorial where a woman who was raped now has to deal with her attacker moving in NEXT DOOR.

The rapist, who served four years in prison, doesn't understand why it's a problem.

"When asked why he moved in next door to his victim, he told the Southland Times he held no grudges against her, had served his time and wanted a peaceful life. 'If I can get over it, why can't she? It's past tense,' he said."

And no, it wasn't in an Islamic country. That's New Zealand.

No, Rick just thinks its a hypocritical view of liberty when we allow gays to serve openly in the military but won't let kids celebrate Christmas openly in schools. Per his commercial.

But the laws in those few states don't allow people to kill on the basis of sexual orientation, or throw them in jail. Do they need to get in the real world? Absolutely. But being gay in Mississippi or Arkansas is still a damn sight safer than being gay in Saudi Arabia.

Isn't that the moral relativism so loathed by your, uh, political bedfellows?

Look deskslave, you want it better? Move to Saudi Arabia. Enjoy.
