As of Feb. 5, 2010, Advance Publication's employment pledge for non-union employees will cease to exist. Can't think of any place in the country that had such a deal with its employees.

That's a huge step for Newhouse -- and not in the right direction.

Very disturbing to this former Newhouse employee.

At least they're up front about it now, rather than hacking away at the promise as they did before shuttering Ann Arbor and cutting Flint, Saginaw and Bay City back to three days a week.

New Orleans worker posted the same info on his Facebook page.

Easier to make for a private company than a public one.

Advance has offered buyouts at some of its newspapers in the last 12-18 months.

How many more people would have taken a buyout if they knew unpaid furloughs and this change were in the works?

I also wonder if Advance's leadership can sleep well at night knowing all this was coming while employees were considering staying or leaving. Now they're just like the rest of the industry.

Am told that Advance (or at least a few papers in it) offered a new buyout this morning for the very purpose of addressing the complaint made by you. So congrats! You are now a mover and shaker.

Does this mean that in February, the hatchets are coming out.

I shake, but I hate moving.

Good for Advance for offering more buyouts.
