Portland Press Herald has sliced 31 jobs, 25 through buyouts and six through layoffs...no names yet, but this does hit the newsroom..Paper is also closing its four satellite bureaus...Augusta, Biddeford, Bath, and Washington....parent company Blethen (Seattle Times) has been trying to sell the PPH and its other properties in the state...this is the third round of layoffs...

Why (other than suits grubbing money) would Portland close its bureau in Augusta.... Wouldn't that be, you know, important

And no, grifter. It's the end of the quarter

So much for getting through Thursday unscathed.

This is getting too close to home for me. Not fun being a newbie in this business.

Shit, you're golden as long as you aren't in a union shop. You come cheap.

Sorry man, but there's absolutely no way any of us should be saying "phew, bad news over, at least for today."

It just keeps coming and coming and coming. It's mind-blowing.

And Portland's supposed to be one of The Good Ones. Jesus Christ.

bit of an update....no losses in sports...about 8-10 in the newsroom, mostly via the buyout...including veteran night editor David McNab, who had two tours as the SE there
