I think he's going with actors in smaller roles that overshadow everyone else.

I'd say Philip Seymour Hoffman in Boogie Nights and a bunch of other stuff.

Alec Baldwin in "Glengary Glen Ross"...he NAILS that part and he's up against a bunch of heavyweights (Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey)
Sean Penn in "Carlito's Way"

Gary Oldman, True Romance & The Professional
John Turturro, The Jesus in The Big Lebowski
John Malkovich in Dangerous Liaisons

 

Kevin Spacey -- "L.A. Confidential"
Johnny Depp -- "Pirates of the Carribean"
Harrison Ford -- All the "Star Wars" movies

Denzel kicked Tom's ass all over the screen in this one. Hanks should have stayed in comedy. As for actors who own the screen:

I kinda meant actors in non-starring roles who stole the show.

And yes, Paul Rudd was amazing in 40-year old virgin. His scene talking about his ex-girlfriend is amazing. And of course Steve Carrell was awesome in the movie. But I thought Rudd stole the show.
