They know. The vets in their units will give them lowdown because they don't want to get plugged because someone in their unit didn't know their shit. And they don't want to have to write the letter back to some poor kid's family because he didn't know shit from shinola over there. So even the first-timers have an idea of what they're getting into.
Interesting tidbit from I think David Zucchino's book on the invasion. After the U.S. rolled through a town heavy in Shi'a, they asked the American troops, "When can we start killing the Sunnis?"
That was nearly 4 1/2 years ago. We're supposed to try to stop that, something that's been brewing for generations?
