He's a CEO. That says it all. (ducking)

Before "Punch" Sulzberger died, do you think he hated it when Charles Dolan would tease him about Jimmy being smarter than "Pinch"?

He could've been right without Jimmy being smart.

Exactly. Who else could Charles tease about having a smarter son?

The Boston Red Sox have nothing on the Times when it comes to bashing an employee as they walk out the door.

If she was African-American, they would have called her lazy.

The settlement given Abramson must've been large indeed to get her to a) agree never to discuss her firing and b) pass up what seems like a dandy wrongful dismissal plus sex discrimination suit. Wonder how the Times will hide the amount in its next quarterly report.

As neato as it feels to catch the Times in the bear trap of hypocrisy, it's pretty clear Schulzberger just never liked her from the jump. Faced with possibly losing Baquet (the guy he wanted) he gave her the boot. Should she have been earning as much as Keller? Probably. But she also came to the job with fewer credentials than Keller. How many men whose boss clearly disliked them would get a raise? She got screwed, but it was clearly because she couldn't navigate the choppy waters of NYT politics and alliances, not because she was a woman or a poor journalist. Happens to about 50 percent of corporate executives, doesn't it?

    This is exactly right.

Also, she accepted the job in the first place. She didn't have to, no matter what the pay was (and I'm guessing it was quite good, anyway, furthering lessening her chances of winning any suit).

If it's true that she was making less than one of her deputies, the Times is all wrong here.

Certainly. But do you believe that? Seems like multiple places said she learned she was making less than Keller, she found out, was pissed, then got a raise. I've seen one place suggest as a rumor that a deputy was making more than her. And no one else back up that claim.

I don't know how to judge it. I do know that the Times is quite comical in its entire response, to the point that it cannot be taken seriously about any of it.

They went from saying Abramson was making "not less" than Keller, to "not meaningfully less," to an amount "directly comparable." Then they declared the matter over because "directly comparable" sounds good.
