I hope they had to melt down Doris Duke's casket in order to raise money to settle this.

I wonder if the Duke 88 are covered in this, as well.

In the on-deck circle: Nifong. Lube up, bitch!

Wait, why was the university sued?

Maybe it had to with the 88 professors and instructors who signed the libelous petition.

Code for we really don't want to look like a bunch of reactionary F-tards any longer, so we'll buy our way out fo trouble.

I would have taken the money too if it was enough to be done with it. But these kids' families are probably rich enough they didn't need it. They should have exposed Duke for the louses they are and drug them through the mud.

THEN get a lot of money out of them

Because the school didn't back players who hadn't been convicted of anything.

Then why sue a university and not those particular professors?

Maybe because the university, and not the professors:

    -- Suspended the players.
    -- Presumed their guilt, or
-- At best, distanced itself from them.
    -- Canceled the season.
    -- Fired the coach.
-- Has a lot of money.

Not quite sure what the school did wrong with respect to these three players. If I had to guess, they probably paid no more than five figures each.

Oh... I'd guess it's considerably more than that, what with the petition, the ruining of lives and reputation, hanging them out to dry, forgetting innocent till proven guilty and all...
Mid-six figures that will all go to legal bills

I am far from a fan of Duke as any, but I would assume...
-- The school can suspend students for hiring strippers and general misconduct.
-- The school can't be sued for presuming any guilt.
-- The school can't be sued for distancing itself from students that choose to hire strippers.
-- The school can cancel a sport or season if it wants (it happens with other sports all the time).
-- A player can't sue because the school fired the coach.
-- I guess that is probably the only reason.

I'm not sure if you are allowed to sue for legal bills or not. Also, it wasn't the school that put them on trial, it was Nifong. The school didn't ruin the kids' reputation either. Again, that was Nifong.

Let's see...lack of institutional control, creating an atmosphere of slander, libel, defamation of character...when Nifong decided to throw these kids under the bus, Duke asked "How many busses do you need?"
