Well, then it's about to become a negotiatiing tactic for 100 or so newspapers. ... I really think you're going to see a boatload of cancellations.

    I don't think it is a tactic.
The Strib has a legit beef. The AP picks up unique Strib copy or breaking news, the AP strips off the byline, slaps in the AP bug and puts it out on the wire. Then the Strib's main comp, the PiPress, runs it and the readers don't know that it came from the Strib.
That's a big problem for the rewrites. Since the originating paper is taken out of the mix, any and all competition can run it.
And like I said in another thread. If you have the supplemental wires, you can make up the difference in terms of copy. Agate would be a little bit of a problem, but I think the real issue is photos.
Some outposts, the only photos you get are from the AP.
If the Trib people were smart, they would put more pictures into the mix. Maybe ink a deal with a foreign news agency to distribute photos.

Even if you are talking just the biggest of big-picture content, you would need very generous deadlines to depend on supplemental wires. They are not predictable, especially in sports.

    I don't know about that.
Lopresti with Gannett News Service would have a complete gamer filed before AP would move the first add to the lede.
I'm not entirely sure how he did it, and wasn't always super clean copy, but it wasn't like he would have the Super Bowl score wrong.
But not every wire has a Lopresti filing gamers. Big metros are moving columns and analysis on the first run.
I suspect though that if the papers get serious about ditching the AP, you'll see the other wires adding gamer specialists, who crank it out as fast as possible.
That's what I think. You'll see people adjust. Right now, those other wires don't see a need. Add the need and people will fill it.

Lopresti is great. But you have to understand, most of the supplementals do not have staff sports writers the way Gannett has Lopresti. The content comes from newspapers. And in most cases, those papers close their editions first before moving content to the supplementals. It's the smart choice and that's what they do, so don't hold your breath.

    In spades, Tom. In spades.

Well, if it really bothers them that much, they need to start slapping multiple layers of embargoes and copyright notices on their local copy. Then, the first time they see an AP story with more than about 3 similar words in sequence, bitch like hell.

I think West Coast papers will have an easier time adjusting because of the flow of copy that rolls across the wire around 10 p.m. After the East Coast deadlines, the flood gates open and we can actually chose the best story, not the first story that comes across the wire.
