As someone who loves baseball and could have played it at the small college level (but wanted to party in college), I've always thought Jeter was overrated as a defender. Not bad, but certainly overrated ... and some of his defensive highlights wouldn't have been so "INCREDIBLE!" if he'd worn just about any other uniform.

Obviously, it paid off, but moving Ripken to short ended up being "robbing Peter to pay Paul" for the Orioles. They went through something like 12 starting third basemen in 15 years before Ripken moved back to third.

As I recall, Weaver really liked Glenn Gulliver as third baseman of the future and that's why Ripken was moved. But Gulliver couldn't do anything but draw walks. Then Weaver quit and Altobelli gave the job to Todd Cruz, who was a bust. Then came Floyd Rayford, Craig Worthington, etc., etc.

i only was counting the guys who didn't juice. ;)

  10. And Pokey Reese had a similar catch IN THE SAME GAME!! But he did it effortlessly enough that it was ignored.

"Regardless of these studies Jeter is a Hall of Fame player. Let's say he retires in 5 years. Projecing ahead that will leave him with over 3000 hits.

He will be eligible for Hall in 2018 ( wow kind of scary thought) What other shortstops will be candidates at that point?

He wouldn't be if he didn't play for the Yankees.
