A New "Internship" For Me... To Fix Bad Football

I've been yapping on social media - as well as here - about all of the ineptness that I see in college football/the NFL.

Reached out to a friend of mine who is the HC of a Division III program about this and how I would go into being a time out/clock management specialist. I wasn't asking about his program, specifically.

He said, without hesitation, "you're welcome to join us the rest of the season to see if this is something you want to do. Programs do need this and it is a substantial advantage for those who know what they're doing."

Meeting with him today at his office to go over time-out philosophy and we are of the same mind of saving a time-out early in a half as opposed to burning it for a measly 5 yards on a delay of game.

Very excited about this as I do believe this will be a growing part of the sport.

Sounds interesting ... but isn't using time outs and clock management the head coach's responsibility? Especially head coaches who have the OC calling plays.

You're right about the delay of game vs. time out. Always burns me up when "my" team will have, say, 3rd and 10 deep in their own territory and call time out to avoid a delay penalty. Lose the five yards, save the time out.

Bill Simmons has been railing on this for years.

It really should be called the Andy Reid Memorial Coaching Position.

    Well, when Reid dies, maybe.

I always wonder if this is a coaching ineptness thing or if the players on the field don't understand the situation or panic and call for the timeout. Both happen, I suppose.

That was kind of the joke.

And his clock management skills died a long time ago.
