The thing about it is, I know of those who elide it when they speak, dropping the 'h' from the beginning of words, for example; 'an 'istoric'

Think Dick Van Dyke in 'Mary Poppins'.

So, Buck, what side of the line in the sand were you on?

    A pet peeve.

I HATE "an historic." The "H" is NOT silent.

    A historic day.

I was the one looking it up. 8) (For the record, I vote a. But I think I say it somewhere in between.)

"And there's an hit up the middle!"

    "It's an his-and-her set."

    Looks pretty stupid, huh?

    A is the answer.

I really think it's simplest to just go with the AP stylebook.

    Eliminates the discussion.

    Definitely 'A historic.'

Isn't this something everybody learns in a beginning level class at j-school? If it sounds like it starts with a consonant, use an 'a.' The 'h' in historic is definitely pronounced.
